For four unforgettable days, I travelled through Bastar, Chhattisgarh, discovering a fascinating world where nature, history, tribal culture and art come together. As a cartoonist and illustrator, I carried my sketchbook for the ‘Chitrakot Mein Chitrakar’ event—and returned with 12 live sketches and countless memories.
My journey began in Jagdalpur, exploring the Indravati River, Jagdalpur Palace and Bastar’s rich artistic heritage. Meeting the present Raja of Bastar was a memorable experience. Visits to the Bastar Art Gallery and Badal – The Tribal Arts and Cultural Centre offered glimpses of the region’s vibrant traditions.
The monsoon transformed Bastar into a spectacular natural canvas. At Chitrakote Waterfall, the mighty Indravati roared down in a magnificent horseshoe-shaped cascade. I sat before the waterfall and made a live sketch, capturing its movement and energy.
Tirathgarh Waterfall was another wonderful experience. Surrounded by dense greenery, its cascading waters created a breathtaking scene, and once again I took out my sketchbook to capture it live. Tamda Ghumar and Saathdhara waterfalls added more unforgettable moments to the journey.
The journey took me deep into the forests, where I met tribal people and experienced their close connection with nature. At Danteshwari Temple, I discovered Bastar’s spiritual heritage, while Barsoor, with its ancient temples, archaeological remains and remarkable Battisa Temple, revealed another fascinating chapter of its history.
At Kondagaon, I met local artisans and witnessed Bastar’s living craft traditions. Sketching the people, crafts, temples, waterfalls and landscapes made the journey deeply personal.
I sincerely thank Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the Chhattisgarh Public Relations Department and Cartoon Watch for inviting me to be part of this tourism journey.
Bastar is not just a destination—it is an experience. Especially during the monsoon, it is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Visit Bastar to refresh your soul, recharge your energy and reconnect with nature.
