Cartoon Watch News : Veteran cartoonists from the two Telugu-speaking states expressed deep concern that the younger generation of cartoonists is turning away from political cartoons, showing a stronger interest in animations, comic books, gaming, and VFX in movies. This trend raises significant questions about the future of political cartooning, they warned.
The discussion took place at a Telugu cartoonists’ mega workshop organized at the Press Club in collaboration with Artbar, held on Sunday. The event drew around 120 cartoonists from Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh. While many participants were busy with cartooning activities, senior cartoonists shared their expertise and experiences on various topics.

Subhani from Deccan Chronicle highlighted techniques for drawing political cartoons, especially those inspired by current political events, and demonstrated by creating a live political cartoon on stage with a detailed explanation. T. Venkatrao, the most senior cartoonist present, explored the nuances of 2D and 3D cartoon drawing, shading, and lighting effects. Surendra discussed silent cartoons and their ability to transcend language barriers; Narsim explained the workings of a cartoon syndicate, while Shankar provided insights into creating caricatures. Mrityunjay focused on the integration of technology with cartooning, and Shanku shared his experience running the successful cartoon magazine ‘Hasya Priya’ 35 years ago.
“The workshop felt like a reunion. The experts delivered practical demonstrations and updated us on the latest digital techniques,” said Dr. Bhavannarayana Kandala, a participant.
